Causes of Delamination on Extruded Aluminum Profile Surfaces

  1. The primary cause is oil stains and dust adhering to the surface of ingots, or severe wear on the working section at the front of the extrusion cylinder, resulting in accumulation of contaminated metal around the front elastic zone.
  2. During extrusion, contaminated metal is drawn along the sliding surface of the elastic zone and wrapped around the finished profile to form delamination.
  3. Defects usually appear at the tail of profiles. In severe cases, they may occur at the middle or even the front section.
  4. Other contributing factors include unreasonable die hole arrangement with too small clearance from the inner wall of the extrusion cylinder, as well as excessive wear or deformation of extrusion cylinders and extrusion rams.

Elimination Methods for Delamination on Extruded Aluminum Profile Surfaces

  1. Improve the surface cleanliness of ingots.
  2. Reduce the surface roughness of extrusion cylinders and dies, and replace severely worn extrusion cylinders and extrusion rams exceeding tolerance in a timely manner.
  3. Optimize die design; arrange die holes as far away from the edge of the extrusion cylinder as possible.
  4. Reduce the diameter difference between extrusion rams and the inner diameter of extrusion cylinders to cut down residual contaminated metal inside the extrusion cylinder liner.
  5. Maintain intact extrusion cylinder liners, or clean the liner regularly with gaskets.
  6. Thoroughly clean butt scrap after shearing, and avoid lubricant contamination.
